It's Solar Noon Somewhere

Which window gets less sun during your flight? Enter two airports and your departure time to compare the left and right sides.

Sun direction during the flight

Left Right Ahead Behind Night

Sun direction around the plane

Top-down aircraft diagram. The sun moves around the aircraft as flight progresses. AHEAD LEFT RIGHT BEHIND

Sun position relative to the plane's nose

Sun height in the sky

Side-view sky diagram. The sun moves vertically above and below the estimated aircraft horizon. HIGH SUN HORIZON BELOW

Estimated sun height above the aircraft horizon

How accurate is this? We model an approximate great-circle route, not the airline's actual track. Departure time is interpreted in the departure airport's time zone; flight duration is estimated from airport distance. Aircraft altitude is estimated to account roughly for seeing sunrise earlier or sunset later at cruising height. Actual routes, timing, cloud cover, aircraft attitude, wings, and window shapes can change what you see. No flight-tracking API or booking data is used. Which side of the plane should you sit on?

The shadier side can vary through a flight as the airplane follows a curved route and the sun moves across the sky. This calculator estimates the sun's direction at intervals between your airports, including possible sunrise and sunset views.

It assumes a great-circle route and approximate aircraft altitude. Flight paths, departure delays, clouds, wing positions, and flight times can change the result. Results are estimates, not guaranteed window views.
